Systems and Network Engineer



Global Communication Company in the fast growing Tech City of East Croydon, UK currently requires Systems & Network Engineers to work internally, running and managing servers and systems at the backend of our comms and telephony products. At a minimum you must be technically expert and completely at home with Linux, Apache, MySQL, bash scripting with decent core networking knowledge; TCP/IP, UDP, ARP, DNS etc.

To become a valuable member of our operations team and assist with the running, maintenance and development of our network and services

  • Day to day administration and maintenance of the Company’s systems, voice products and network services, including local and upstream connectivity, traffic management, security and database management

  • Hardware installation and maintenance in regional datacentres

  • Perform rollouts of software updates and maintenance patches in line with the company’s software configuration management processes

  • Daily use of network monitoring and management systems

  • Database management and optimisation

  • Assist with daily network management activities (backups, system monitoring, etc)

  • To assist with “on call” system monitoring and emergency maintenance on a regular basis to support 24x7 operations

  • Take on internal IT responsibilities as required


Essential Experience
  • “Degree” level intellect

Desirable Experience
  • CCNA qualification or better

Essential Skills
  • Two years demonstrable experience of systems and network administration in a service oriented environment

  • Minimum two years experience of Linux build, configure and management

  • MySQL administration management experience

  • Grounding in security including VPNs and firewalls

  • Detailed knowledge of Linux (preferably CentOS)

  • Detailed system administration skills in a replicated/ clustered MySQL 5.x environment

  • Detailed understanding of DNS, TCP/IP & NATs in a WAN environment

  • Linux (CentOS) hardware build and installation

  • Administration knowledge of Apache

  • Use of virtualisation technologies such as Xen

  • Scripting using technologies such as Bash and PHP

Desirable Skills
  • Demonstrable experience in a VOIP Service Provider/ Telco environment

  • Experience of administering VOIP systems, for example FreeSWITCH, Asterisk, etc

  • Demonstrable networking experience within the context of a service environment

  • Administering multi-site, multi-cluster environments including such aspects as load balancing, fail-over, etc

  • Operational systems knowledge of VOIP technologies including: FreeSWITCH & openSIPS

  • Knowledge of SIP & RTP and ability to trace and report on such traffic

  • TLS/SSL understanding especially in context of SIP/ RTP

  • Utilisation of the NAGIOS Monitoring System

  • LDAP

  • C/C++ PHP skills to carry out operations related development work

Essential Circumstances
  • Live within commuting distance of East Croydon

  • Category B driving license

  • Due to the nature of the Company’s products and services, the jobholder must on occasion be willing and available to work extra hours if the needs of the Company require it

  • Present an acceptable appearance at all times

  • Since this role involves access to systems processing confidential and sensitive customer financial information, all staff are required to undertake background and reference checks prior to and periodically (at least once a year) during employment.


Salary Details
  • £30-50k depending on experience
